We’re so happy Stephanie has shared her beauty tool expertise with us.
Facial rolling has been around for centuries and has been the modern-day “go to” when first exploring the world of holistic, natural beauty options. The facial roller has the power to connect body and mind through the gentle stimulation of Acupuncture points and energy lines located on the face, as well as promoting the flow of the lymphatic system. Relaxation, reduced inflammation and puffiness are all benefits of a regular Facial Rolling Ritual- what’s not to love!
I like to think of the Facial Roller as “Level 1” when starting with beauty tools. It offers a gentle stimulation and is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to an ancient beauty practice. When your aim is to improve the absorption of your favourite facial oil or serum, reduce puffiness (especially for the pesky area underneath the eyes), improve microcirculation and move fluid retention the Facial Roller is your go to beauty tool!
The Facial Rolling ritual is perfect for anytime of day, daily, heck twice a day if you feel inspired. You have the freedom to play around and decide when works best for you! Many people opt for the morning as a way to reduce puffiness (Tip - Leave your Facial Roller in the fridge so it is nice and cooling) and “wake up” their face and mind, ready for the day ahead. Others prefer an evening practice as a way to relax and unwind before bed. Whilst this practice is best performed in front of a mirror, once you become a seasoned expert, this isn’t so important and rolling whilst you watch your favourite tv series won’t impact its effectiveness.
All you need to get started is the Facial Roller in your crystal of choice, and facial oil or serum. The Habitual Beauty tools are created from Rose Quartz (Genuine and ethically sourced, which is also important to note when selecting your tool). The energetics of what we use in both ritual and for our skin is extremely important. Cheaper, imitation stones can cause abrasion, break easily and don’t embody the same energetics as the authentic crystals). Rose Quartz is universally connected to the Heart and the energetics of Love. It is associated with the fourth “Heart” chakra, promoting emotional balance, self love, love for others, and builds confidence. The Heart is considered to be the centre of everything in Chinese Medicine, as its health and happiness is integral to the rest of the system remaining balanced. Rose Quartz is beneficial for most skin types and complexions, although it does possess superpowers when working on small, fine lines and red flushed cheeks.
When it comes to selecting your serum, opt for something that will allow the tool to easily glide and that is ideally natural and organic. Rosehip oil, Camellia oil and Jojoba are all wonderful options! If you have a skin condition, It’s always best to consult a professional before using a new beauty product.
Using the Facial Roller is simple, however, there are a few key pointers to keep in mind if you want to get the most out of your ritual.
Before using the Facial Roller
Make sure your face is clean and cleansed, hydrated with a few spritz’s of rose water hydrosol and 4-6 drops of serum or facial oil.
Always start from the middle of the face and roll upward and outward. This action is to lift the energy and work in an opposite direction to sagging skin.
Start on the right side of the face. This is the side the energy or “Qi” in Chinese Medicine begins to circulate on the face. The right side is also related to our Yang or Masculine side, so as most of us experience a world in which we are rushing, busy and “hustling”. We have to calm the energy on this side before attending to the left side, which is linked to the feminine or Yin energy.
Repeat each rolling action 5 - 10 times before moving onto the next area.
The large head on the roller is for larger surface areas like the cheeks and forehead. The little head is specifically for under the eye area and other delicate areas.
Finish the ritual by rolling down the nose of the face. This is traditionally used as a means to reduce inflammation.
Be mindful to clean your roller regularly and avoid rolling over areas of inflammation, break out, acne, dermatitis or broken skin.
Pro tip: To increase product penetration when using your favourite sheet mask, run your roller under warm water for 10 seconds and roll over the mask for deeper absorption.
I love the Facial Roller as it is the perfect introductory tool or gateway into The Ancient Chinese Beauty Ritual. This ritual also incorporates Gua Sha which can also be purchased from Habitual Beauty, Facial Cupping and a myriad of other amazing techniques for keeping us young and radiant. I recommend using this amazing tool for at least 21 days and see for yourself how beautiful you not only look but feel.
