A planned or unexpected caesarean birth can bring a mix of emotions, from excitement to anxiety and so much more. We hope the below helps you to understand how to best prepare for some of the more confronting, and exciting moments leading up to meeting your baby.
Maternal assisted c-section is an option.
Speak to your care provider to find out if this is an option at your hospital. A great opportunity for a mother to feel involved in the delivery.
You'll be completely naked (well almost)!
As part of your surgery prep, you'll pop on a gown and compression stockings. Once you've received your spinal/epidural, your gown will be removed.
You can still have skin to skin with your bub.
If both mum and bub are well and no medical complications arise, you will be able to have skin to skin with your baby. This can also help to support early breastfeeding initiation.
The operating theatre can be busy.
There is a lot of activity in the theatre and lots of drs, anaesthetist and support staff in the room to ensure both you and your baby are safe and receive the best care.
Birth preferences are still a thing!
Bring your birth playlist along as this will help to you feel calm. Your partner can support you with affirmations and breathing techniques. Don't forget your phone too! One of the staff will be available to take those first photographs for you.
Prep for your breastfeeding journey.
Expressing colostrum before birth can be useful for c-section mothers to support breastfeeding goals. Ask your midwife to help with feeding positions that do not cause discomfort on your wound.
Be aware for a possible emotion rollercoaster.
Caesarean birth can bring a mix of emotions. Understanding how to prepare and stay calm can make a significant difference in your birth experience.
