1: Berries
Berries are high in antioxidants which protect the skin and are also an excellent source of vitamin C. Strawberries actually contain more vitamin C than oranges.
2: Green Tea
One of the most powerful antioxidants, green tea improves skin hydration and elasticity.
3: Red Wine
Red wine has been known to slow your skin’s aging process by impairing harmful free radicals that damage your skin. This is because red wine contains the highest concentrations of resveratrol, the antioxidant famous for reversing the aging process.
4: Tomatoes
Apart from being a great source of vitamin C, tomatoes have a high concentration of carotenoids - the pigment that gives tomatoes their red colour. Carotenoids act as antioxidants in the body and are also converted to vitamin A which is essential for growth and development - including the outer dermis.
5: Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate or cocoa contains a large concentration of antioxidants. These antioxidants can improve skin thickness and hydration while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
6: Sunflower Seeds
Generally speaking all nuts and seeds are a great source of nutrients and antioxidants like vitamin E. Sunflower seeds in particular are an excellent source of vitamin E which is an important antioxidant for the skin.
7: Avocados
Avocados are high in fats and vitamin E and C which are important for maintaining healthy skin. Vitamin E is most effective for healthy skin when combined with vitamin C, which itself is an antioxidant that protects the skin from oxidative damage - damage caused by the sun and the environment.
*Smashing an avo does not improve its effectiveness. (it just costs more unnecessarily)
8: Walnuts
This should probably sit higher in the list since walnuts are such a great source of essential fats, vitamin E and C, zinc, selenium and protein - all of which are nutrients your skin needs to stay healthy. Cashews are another great source of skin enriching vitamins and nutrients.
Need More Than a Healthy Snack?
The following foods are rich in collagen, vitamin C and/or antioxidants and have been proven to be good for glowing skin. Whist they may not be ‘snacks’, it is still important to include them as part of a regular diet and healthy meal plan.
Broccoli
A fantastic source of vitamins and minerals, broccoli also contains carotenoids that are important for skin health as well as sulforaphane which may protect against sun damage.
Fish
Fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids that can keep skin moisturised and reduces inflammation. Fatty fish, like salmon, is also a great source of protein, zinc, and vitamin E - one of the most important antioxidants for your skin.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are one of the best sources of beta-carotene, a nutrient found in plants. This nutrient is converted to vitamin A in the body and helps protect the skin from UV damage at a cellular level, thus helping to prevent cell death and dry, wrinkled skin.
Beans
Like nuts and seeds, beans are high in protein and contain amino acids necessary for collagen production. Beans also contain a high concentration of protein, one of the richest plant based sources in fact and is often referred to as the ‘poor man’s meat’
